Today was Amsterdam day. We got up reasonably early and enjoyed breakfast in the hotel. We then got the hotel shuttle to Schiphol. Schiphol isca wonderful airport. It is light and airy with loads of shops and restaurants. It also has a railway station. We bought train tickets to Central Amsterdam without difficulty and we were on our way.
Our first impression was that there was a lot of water which was lovely but
also that there was a lot of rubbish around. We all needed the toilet and were
surprised to find that we had to pay 90 cents to use what we're fairly grim
facilities.
We had booked a canal trip with Captain Jack and what a joy that turned out to
be. There were only 7 passengers - we 4 plus 3 Canadian ladies - and there was
more wine than we could ever hope to drink. It was a beautiful sunny morning
and we thoroughly enjoyed sailing along the many cabali, listening to the
commentary and sipping wine and soft drinks.
After the canal trip we had a walk around Amsterdam. The streets were now busy
with visitors and the roads with bicycles.
We stopped for lunch at an outdoor pizzeria and then set off for Anne Frank's
house. Imagine our surprise when Mike spotted a naked man on the street
opposite and then another and another! In fact there must have been well over
50 naked people (mostly men) of varying shapes, sizes and ages. Eventually they
all got on their bicycles and off they went. We were then approached by a
reporter and camera crew who wanted to know our opinion of the event. We were
told that it was a protest against fossil fuels. The slogan was it's not crude
to be nude.
We then walked past the Anne Frank house and sauntered through the streets and
over the canal bridges until we got back to the station where we got the train
back to Schiphol and the shuttle to the hotel for a well-deserved rest.
