Day 8 (Friday 18 July 2025) Cologne

In spite of our exciting late night yesterday we still managed to get going at a fairly reasonable hour as we had planned a day in Cologne. We hadn't realised before we came here that going to Cologne was a realistic possibility but it was actually just 90 minutes away. Mike avoided crossing the border on the motorway as we knew there were likely to be long queues as the German authorities were now carrying out more stringent checks.

We arrived in Cologne and parked right under the cathedral. It is a magnificent Gothic structure and it towered above us as we emerged from the car park. Much to our surprise it was free to go in and, as we entered, we could hear the magnificent organ being played.  We were impressed by the stained glass windows and the gold casket which was supposed to contain relics from the Magi.

After looking round the cathedral we went for lunch of schnitzel or bratwurst by the Rhein. After lunch we walked along the Rhein and admired the many tour steamers and day boats. We then set off for the 4711 Eau de Cologne shop with its tapestry showing how their premises under French rule in Cologne became known as 4711.

After a walk through the shopping area we were back at the cathedral where we had milk shakes in an outdoor cafe with the most wonderful view.

It was then time to return to the house. We had a snooze in the car - luckily Mike didn't!  It was then a beer on the small patio at the back of the house whilst Mike and Marion watched the Open golf and we watched the Notts Outlaws win in the T20 blast.
