It was a really early start today as we were booked on an excursion from Amsterdam Station and had to be there for 8.15am. We had breakfast at 6 and then got the hotel shuttle and train to Amsterdam Centraal station. Some rain was forecast so we had our umbrellas in case.
Our guide was Cuban/Dutch with excellent English. Our first stop was Zaanse Schans which we had visited with Catherine and James in April. It has been very cold that day so it was lovely to be able to walk about in the warm sunshine. We were taken to a working windmill which made peanut oil and then we had a little time for shopping. For coverage of our visit here in April, see - Day 5 of Our Bulb Fields (April 2025) blog
Our next stop was the beautiful little town of Volendam on the IJsselmeer. The
sun was shining and, as we enjoyed some refreshments overlooking the lake, we
felt as if we were on the Riviera. When we first arrived we had some cheese
tasting but it would have been nice to have had more free time here.
We then got on a boat for the 30-minute trip over the IJsselmeer to Marken
where there was a visit to a clog maker. As Graeme and Elizabeth had seen clog
making in April, they opted out and had an ice cream. Again it would have
been nice to have had more free time here.
When we got back to Schiphol we had something to eat and then returned to the
hotel for a much needed rest.
