Today we spent the morning in Gulpen, a pretty little town about 30 minutes drive away. We had a walk around the town and then had a lunch in a very nice creperie with a working watermill, in fact, the power generated from the mill cooked our crepes.
After lunch we drove over the border into Germany to Aachen, with its beautiful ninth century cathedral containing Charlemagne's gold casket, a mosaic ceiling
and beautiful stained glass.
After a walk around and a beer, we set off back. We were surprised to see the
long queue of cars and lorries waiting to cross the border from the Netherlands
into Germany as the German authorities checked the status of arrivals and made a mental note to avoid that route when we visit Cologne
later in the stay.
